Virtues

Positioned within the heart of the celestial economy, the Virtues constitute the middle rank of the second angelic triad.

Known in Greek as _Dynameis_, a term often translated as 'Powers' or 'Mights' in various scriptural contexts, this order functions as the dynamic conduit for divine strength and the primary agency for the manifestation of miracles within the created order.

Situated beneath the Dominions, who prescribe governance, and above the Powers, who maintain order against hostile forces, the Virtues are characterised by an unshakable virility and an overflowing fullness of divine energy.

Etymology and Spiritual Significance

The appellation Virtues signifies a specific mode of godlike energy that is defined by courage and steadfastness. This title implies that the Virtues are incapable of weakness or feebleness; they do not falter in their reception of divine illuminations but mount upwards in fullness of power to an assimilation with God.

Unlike earthly strength, which may be subject to depletion or corruption, the strength of the Virtues is immutable.

They never fall away from the Divine Life through weakness but ascend unwaveringly to the superessential Virtue, which is the Source of all virtue.

Their existence is a perpetual fashioning of themselves in virtue, turning perfectly towards the Source and flowing forth providentially to fill those below them with power. Thus, they embody the masculine, vigorous aspect of the divine nature, representing the immensity of God’s power which knows no exhaustion.

The Ministry of Miracles

The primary theological function of the Virtues is the execution of divine volition through signs and wonders. They are the celestial agents responsible for the working of miracles in the material world.

While the Dominions may ordain what is to be done, the Virtues provide the power to execute these commands, serving as the conduit for divine grace and strength to permeate the cosmos.

In their relationship to humanity, the Virtues are the dispensers of the grace of miracle-working to the saints. When holy men and women on earth perform healings, foretell the future, or demonstrate authority over the elements, it is through the ministry of the Virtues that this grace is sent down.

They constitute the channel through which the laws of nature are temporarily suspended or superseded by the higher laws of grace, demonstrating that the material world remains subject to the spiritual.

Cosmic and Personal Fortitude

Beyond the spectacular manifestation of miracles, the Virtues exercise a profound governance over the mechanics of the universe and the resilience of the human spirit.

Cosmic Governance:

The Virtues are tasked with supervising the movements of the heavenly bodies and the operation of the elements. They ensure that the cosmos remains in order, regulating the celestial mechanics that govern the physical universe.

Through their ministry, the divine will is translated into the kinetic energy of the cosmos, maintaining the harmony of creation against the forces of entropy and chaos.

Spiritual Strengthening:

On a personal level, the Virtues act as the source of spiritual fortitude for the faithful. They are the angels who strengthen human beings during times of labor and overburdening, helping them to bear the infirmities of the weak. They impart the grace of patience, enabling individuals to endure affliction with courage and humility.

Just as they are unshakable in their own contemplation of God, they encourage the faithful to remain steadfast in spiritual struggle, preventing them from fainting in the face of misfortune.

Distinctions within the Second Hierarchy

It is essential to distinguish the Virtues from the other orders within the middle triad, particularly the Powers (_Exousiai_), with whom they are often linguistically confused in translation.

Dominions (_Kyriotetes_): Focus on governance, authority, and the regulation of duties. They are the lords who appoint what must be done.

Virtues (_Dynameis_): Focus on raw power, energy, and the execution of miracles. They provide the strength or faculty to carry out the orders of the Dominions.

Powers (_Exousiai_): Focus on order and the restraint of hostile forces. They are the warriors who have authority over the devil and protect the divine order from demonic disruption.

While the Dominions initiate the administrative order and the Powers guard it against interference, the Virtues supply the dynamic energy required for its operation and the miraculous interventions that transcend it.

The Virtues stand as the fifth rank of the Celestial Hierarchy (or the middle rank of the second triad), embodying the attribute of Divine Strength. They are defined by their unshakable power, their refusal to succumb to weakness, and their perpetual ascent toward the Source of all virtue.

Their ministry is characterised by the working of miracles, the regulation of cosmic movements, and the strengthening of human resolve. Through the Virtues, the Creator reveals that His power is not merely a static authority but a dynamic, life-giving force that sustains the universe and empowers the faithful to transcend their natural limitations.
