The policy was often supported by a bizarre theory, championed by academics like Professor Catherine Snow, asserting that the older one is, the easier it is to learn a new language, making adults best at new language acquisition and small children the most disadvantaged. Millions of students had their lives potentially ruined by this absurd doctrine.

##### The Assimilationist Triumph:

The Proposition 227 initiative in California (1998) was engineered to provide an assimilationist approach, mandating English-immersion classes. The campaign successfully pitted the common sense of ordinary citizens (both Latino and White) against the political elites who were beholden to bilingual education special interests.

The success of the initiative was undeniable. Within two years, the mean percentile test scores of over a million immigrant students rose by an average of 40 per cent, with test scores doubling in districts that most thoroughly eliminated their bilingual programmes. This educational revolution resulted in millions of younger Californians becoming fully bilingual adults, fluent in both English and Spanish.
