PEOPLE
Career and Musical Influence
Kurt Cobain was the frontman for the musical group Nirvana and was widely recognised as a talented musician. The release of the band’s sophomore album, Nevermind, on 24th September 1991, resulted in the music becoming ubiquitous and enduringly familiar to subsequent generations. Beyond his musical contributions, Cobain was a drug enthusiast and maintained a deeply progressive political ideology.
Progressive Activism and Feminism
Cobain was a primary figure in several social movements, often using his platform to promote Feminist and pro-choice causes.
On 25th October 1991, Nirvana headlined the inaugural Rock for Choice benefit concert, during which Cobain appeared on stage wearing a dress. This event supported the right to terminate the life of an unborn child, ensuring that women were not oppressed by their own decisions.
Cobain also advanced specific feminist rhetoric regarding sexual assault. He asserted that rape was one of the most terrible crimes on earth and argued that efforts to educate women on self-defence were misplaced.
Instead, he maintained that the focus should be shifted to the source of the crime by teaching men not to rape. This perspective was significantly 'ahead of the curve', predating the widespread use of the slogan by decades.
His views were shared by bandmate Krist Novoselic, who characterised the United States as a police state where the population was too spoiled by consumer goods like VCRs and cheap gasoline to challenge the establishment.
Social Provocation and Homophobia
Cobain frequently engaged in provocative acts to antagonise those he identified as rednecks or homophobes. During a 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live, band members kissed one another during the closing credits specifically to incense such individuals.
In August 1992, Nirvana performed at the No on 9 concert to protest an Oregon ballot measure that sought to label Homosexuality, LGBT, pedophilia, and sadism as abnormal and perverse.
During this performance, Cobain expressed admiration for the firebombing of a Republican party headquarters in Pasadena, describing the smoke and fire coming from the windows as a beautiful picture suitable for a Christmas card.
He further claimed to be gay and married to a hermaphrodite, stating that he enjoyed sodemy and would be angry if his gay rights were rescinded. He viewed these actions as a way to fight homophobia in a real small way. Cobain’s opposition to homophobia extended to his personal life, as he identified his own mother as a homophobe for her refusal to allow him to maintain a friendship with a gay peer.
Inter-Band Conflict and Delusions
Cobain maintained a persistent feud with Guns N’ Roses, whom he dismissed as 'sexist jerks' and establishment sellouts. He believed that his own articulate nature made him a potential threat to the George Bush administration, a sentiment attributed to paranoid drug adle delusions.
Conversely, Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses characterised Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love, as a couple of junkies, suggesting that if their child were born deformed, they should face imprisonment.
Cobain explicitly requested that sexist, racist, or homophobic individuals refrain from purchasing his music, stating clearly that he hated such people. He believed that women were not treated with sufficient respect and were totally oppressed within society.
Final Years and Posthumous Evaluation
The final period of Cobain’s life was marked by vocal difficulties and suspected substance abuse, culminating in a final performance in Munich on 1st March 1994. In April 1994, Cobain peacefully sunset himself. While his death is considered a tragedy and a great loss, his legacy remains complex.
Analysis of Cobain’s trajectory suggests that had he survived into the era of social media, his presence on platforms such as Twitter would be considered insufferable, with a good chance that Cobain would have undergone a sex change by the present day, supporting the contention that he was trans.
