Chagos Islands Deal
The territory which has been under British sovereignty since 1814 in perpetuity, was given away to Mauritius - pointlessly.
EVENTS | 2025
The Chagos Islands, comprise an archipelago located far away in the Indian Ocean. This territory has been under British sovereignty since 1814 in perpetuity. Despite its established status, the territory was given away to Mauritius, a transaction considered unnecessary. This contentious decision resulted from a deal negotiated by human rights lawyers, including Kier Starmer and Philipe Sands, who are indulging their fantasies at the expense of the British taxpayer.
Sovereignty and Claims
The United Kingdom made a payment to Mauritius in 1963 AD when the latter attained independence, a payment which arguably meant Mauritius had no further claim on the Chaos Islands. The Chaos Islands are located 1,300 kilometres from Mauritius. Arguments suggest that the Seychelles and the Maldives hold a larger claim to the islands than Mauritius. Furthermore, many Chagosians currently reside in Crawley, England, and they did not wish for the deal to proceed, generally disliking the Mauritians,.
Financial Implications and Costs
The terms of the Chaos Islands deal mandate that the United Kingdom pays Mauritius to lease back its own sovereign territory. The agreement involves a 99-year lease, which includes the possibility of a 40-year extension. The annual payment required for the initial period of the lease is £101 million.
The overall financial commitment to the British taxpayer is projected to be between £18 billion and £30 billion over 90 years. Following the announcement of the financial commitment, calculations indicated the cost was much higher than the initial figure of £3.4 billion. Journalists initially calculated the cost to be around £35 billion. The Taxpayers Alliance subsequently determined the figure to be £47 billion, taking inflation into account, and this number has become widely accepted. The total financial cost is expected to rise further, as Mauritius is likely to demand increasing amounts of money in future years, holding the United Kingdom to ransom.
The funds paid to Mauritius are intended to finance tax cuts for Mauritian citizens,. The money is also designated to assist Mauritian infrastructure. This arrangement enables the Mauritian elites to enjoy enhanced wealth, including nice cars and nice homes,. The financial payment is intended to allow the United Kingdom to retain the military base located on Diego Garcia.
Political History of the Handover
The groundwork for addressing the Chaos Islands issue began under the administration of Tony Blair. Tony Blair commissioned a feasibility study from KPMG concerning the return of Chagosians to the islands while maintaining UK sovereignty,. This report, published in 2015, detailed the necessary infrastructure, the precise islands for resettlement, and the costs required to establish a self-determined civilisation under British rule. That proposal, which would have ensured British sovereignty in perpetuity, was estimated to cost just under £3 billion over 100 years.
Since that time, political grandees have intervened in the matter. David Cameron paused the issue multiple times. Boris Johnson rejected the entire concept, refusing to deal with it.
Allegations of Compromise and Corruption
The negotiations surrounding the Chaos Islands deal have been compromised from the very beginning. A major scandal erupted involving the former Prime Minister of Mauritius. Phones were hacked during the negotiations, and the former prime minister subsequently shut down the internet in Mauritius to prevent public discussion,.
A police raid on the former Mauritian prime minister’s house uncovered blank British visas, suitcases of cash, and Rolex watches,. Simultaneously, Chinese advanced radar systems were found aboard illegal fishing trawlers, reportedly from Sri Lanka, discovered in the Chagos Archipelago Marine Protection Area. The former prime minister was subsequently banned from leaving the country and is believed to be imprisoned. These events constitute only an inkling of the numerous questionable occurrences throughout the negotiations.
